Notify ASQA of Material Changes - When They Happen, Not After

This is what ASQA started with, and it’s essential for compliance.

ASQA's Statement of Regulatory Expectations makes it clear: RTOs must notify ASQA of material changes at the time the event becomes known, not weeks later, not once it's convenient. This applies to changes in ownership, governance, financial administration status, and anything else that affects an RTO's ability to meet its obligations.

ASQA has flagged that it will be increasingly following up with providers who don't notify on time, particularly around changes of ownership. The message is clear: good governance means knowing your obligations and meeting them in real time..

The upside for providers who get this right is real. ASQA has said that providers with strong governance and a good compliance record will see attention focused elsewhere. Compliance here isn't a checklist anymore, but it's what keeps ASQA's scrutiny off your back.

ASQA and TEQSA's MOU Is Now in Motion

Last month, ASQA and TEQSA formally signed their Memorandum of Understanding, putting their Dual Sector Regulatory Strategy into action. The goal is to reduce duplication for dual-sector providers and improve how the two regulators share information and align their processes.

A New Agreement With India's NCVET

In July, ASQA signed a Letter of Intent with India's National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), following on from the Australia-India Education and Skills Council meeting held in December 2025.

The agreement strengthens regulatory collaboration between Australia's and India's VET systems. It's an early-stage step to take a step into a wider network that you'll feel immediately, it signals where cross-border VET cooperation is heading, and for providers working with international students or partnerships, it's a development worth keeping on your bookmark.

ASQA's 5 Principles for Responsible Use of AI in VET

ASQA released its 5 Principles for the Responsible Use of AI in VET in July, developed with input from the sector. This gives RTOs a practical framework for adopting AI tools without stepping outside existing obligations under the 2025 Standards.

Each principle comes with a description, self-assurance questions, and case studies genuinely useful if an RTO is already using AI for anything from content creation to compliance tracking, or is considering it. ASQA has said this is an evolving area, and it will keep engaging with the sector as AI use in VET develops. If your organisation hasn't looked at where AI fits into your current processes, this is a good prompt to start.

“Some people commented that the AI scenarios discussed were not very helpful for the appropriate use of AI”, but these aren’t the first principles, nor would they be the last. Authorities are working to ensure compliant use of AI.

A Few Other Things Worth Knowing

ASQA's Corporate Plan 2026–27 was published on 31 August, setting out the regulator's strategic priorities for the year ahead. Worth a look, if you want a sense of where ASQA's focus is heading.

The GDML course (BSB80120 Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning)) has been suspended and cancelled for new overseas students from 5 October 2026. Existing overseas students who've already commenced can continue, and domestic delivery is unaffected, but if this course is in your scope, it's worth reviewing your enrolment pipeline now.
